Secretary of State Hillary Clinton: Fiscal Cliff Is a National Security Issue

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned Thursday that a failure to pass a budget deal would have dangerous consequences for the global economy and weaken America's standing in the world.

Clinton spoke at the Brookings Institute, where she outlined the state of the relationship between Europe and America. Clinton called a weak economic future on either side of the Atlantic one of the greatest threats to global security and transatlantic relations.

While she stressed that Europe needs to continue to fix problems with the euro zone, she also had a message for Washington.

"If we're serious about strengthening our economic ties, we each need to build stronger foundations at home," Clinton said. "For the United States, this means making tough political choices, it means investing in our own competitiveness to set the platform for stronger economic growth. And it means addressing our domestic fiscal challenges.

"Washington is gearing up for another round of budget negotiations and I am again hearing the concerns of the global implications of America's economic choices," she said. "And although I am now out of politics, let me assure you that for all the differences between the political parties here we are united in our commitment to protect American leadership and bolster our national security. Reaching a meaningful budget deal is critical to both. This is a moment once again to prove the resilience of our economic system and reaffirm American leadership in the world. "

Speaker of the House John Boehner, R-Ohio, said today that fiscal cliff negotiations were not making any progress, but Democrats denied that.

Football needs gay hero, says Manchester United goalkeeper

Manchester United goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard believes football needs a gay hero to help change the attitude of some fans who he feels are "stuck in a time of intolerance".

The Dane claimed it would be the reception of supporters rather than team-mates which would be most likely to discourage a player from coming out as gay.

"As a footballer I think first and foremost that a homosexual colleague is afraid of the reception he could get from the fans," the 28-year-old wrote in his blog published on the Danish version of the Betfair website.

"My impression is that the players would not have a problem accepting a homosexual.

"Homosexuality in football is a taboo subject. The atmosphere on the pitch and in the stands is tough. The mechanisms are primitive, and it is often expressed through a classic stereotype that a real man should be brave, strong and aggressive. And it is not the image that a football fan associates with a gay person.

"The problem for me is that a lot of football fans are stuck in a time of intolerance that does not deserve to be compared with modern society's development in the last decades.

"While the rest of the world has been more liberal, civilised and less prejudiced, the world of football remains stuck in the past when it comes to tolerance."

No top-division footballer has come out since Justin Fashanu did so in 1990 and Lindegaard feels the fight against homophobia in the sport requires a star name to be brave enough to do so.

Lindegaard added: "Homosexuals are in need of a hero. They are in need of someone who dares to stand up for their sexuality."

Fashanu died by suicide in 1998.

Interracial marriage may affect views on money

NEW YORK - Walk into any American conversation, and there are two volatile issues that could make it explode at any moment: race and money.

Combine the two, and spontaneous combustion is guaranteed.

Which is why no one ever talks about it. But given the rapidly rising number of interracial marriages in this country, perhaps it is time to discuss how coming from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds can sometimes lead to disparate attitudes toward money and security.

After all, one in 10 American marriages is now interracial, an all-time high. That is up 28 percent since 2000, according to Census figures, and translates to 5.4 million couples nationwide. That number looks primed to spike even higher, given that 18 percent of unmarried, opposite-sex couples identify as interracial.

So how do our unique backgrounds shape our understanding of money? On the subject, there is perhaps no better person to talk to than Carmen Wong Ulrich. The personal finance expert was famously satirized on the television comedy series "30 Rock" as Carmen Chao, a TV personality of indeterminate ethnicity who skipped effortlessly between multiple languages.

In real life, Ulrich is the author of books including "Generation Debt" and "The Real Cost of Living." She had her own personal finance show on CNBC, and was raised by a Latina mom and a Chinese stepfather. She also married a white guy from Michigan;?they have since split.

While many old stereotypes are wrongheaded, cultural backgrounds do tend to shape our attitudes toward money and security -- and it would serve most marriages well to understand where our partners are coming from, Ulrich said.

"People have very strong cultural and ethnic beliefs that we all carry with us, and a lot of those can have to do with money," she said. "For instance, I was raised as a Latina, where family is everything, and there's no thinking twice about it. I once gave my sister an apartment full of furniture, but my ex was appalled. He couldn't believe that I wanted to give away all that stuff for nothing."

Communities of color talk about money a lot, added Ulrich. "Within the majority culture, you have the option not to talk about it until it becomes an issue. Now, with so many interracial marriages, it's become an issue."

Every individual is different, of course. Suggesting that all members of a particular group have similar attitudes toward money is patently silly. But look broadly at the retirement saving numbers, as some major studies have, and trends begin to emerge. Understanding those trends can help us chart a course forward -- especially within a marriage, where compromises already need to be struck every single day.

For instance, the ING Retirement Research Institute recently looked at the average retirement savings of different minority groups. What it discovered: Cultural attitudes sometimes feed in to those numbers. For instance, while the savings of Hispanics were relatively low (an average of $54,000 in retirement plans), that was partially explained by underlying cultural attributes.

"Hispanics feel less prepared for retirement than other groups," said Fabian Gonzalez, vice president of multicultural sales for ING U.S. "To some extent that reflects the priorities of the Hispanic community, such as living with an extended family and taking care of elderly relatives, or sacrificing one's own wealth in order to give greater opportunities to one's children."

The Great Recession may have also exacerbated our different experiences of money, since it seems to have affected some pockets of American society more than others. A study by Ariel Investments and Aon Hewitt, "401(k) Plans In Living Color," surveyed the retirement savings of 2.4 million employees at 60 large organizations. It found that 8.8 percent of African-Americans had to take hardship withdrawals from their 401(k)s as the recession hit full-force in 2010, compared with 1.7 percent of whites and 1.2 percent of Asians.

Experts say that one's background is only one part of a much larger picture. Even if spouses enter into a marriage carrying their own cultural attitudes toward money, they are often trumped by other factors that are even more deeply entrenched.

"I've come across many marriages with spouses from different cultural backgrounds, and I've noticed that isn't the biggest factor in differing attitudes towards money," said Ann Minnium, an adviser with Concierge Financial Planning in Scotch Plains, N.J. "More often it's upbringing. People who come from a family that had to watch every penny are often that way themselves."

To understand how cultural background can shape one's money views, I need look no farther than my own marriage. My wife is of Haitian heritage, I am a white Canadian, and we are making it work in the multiethnic stew that is Brooklyn, N.Y.

Early in our relationship, ?we had divvied up the bill paying;?she would take care of some, I would tend to others, and I never thought twice about it. But in a premarital counseling session, I discovered this was a major source of stress for her. Since she had grown up in rural Haiti, one of the poorest nations on Earth, she had absorbed the notion that wealth and long-term security were never guaranteed. It could all go away at any moment.

The juggling of bills brought up those fears that we might not have enough, every single month. Understanding where she was coming from, I simply took over the monthly bill-paying and paperwork,?and she tries to put those deeply?harbored financial fears out of her mind.

"It shouldn't be about Me versus You," Ulrich said. "It's about how much respect you have for each other's culture, and about where you can find common ground. Respect the culture enough to talk it through."

Getting base level VMware certification used to be straightforward. There used to be one certification, one certification 150,000 of us achieved. Apparently VMware thought this might be oversimplifying certifying their entire product suite. They are probably correct; there may have been some revenue talk in there as well, maybe.

VCP

The ?regular? VCP became VCP-DV, DV being Datacenter Virtualization. They added the VCP-DT (DeskTop) some time ago to specialize in VMware View knowledge. Most recently they added the VCP-IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) to certify people in vCloud Director. That?s three different tracks to measure against and they really were needed. Now you can clarify your profiles or resumes your skills to a greater degree. If you are a VDI specialist your accreditations can now reflect that, same goes for cloud. In a way, it is hard to not see VCP-DV as ?more basic,? but that?s not entirely accurate ? I would refer to it more as a ?core? designation while the others are more specific. It is a requirement to the DT track, and can be used as a pre-requisite for the IaaS track as opposed to taking another course.

DT

So, why DT? Well maybe you want to move in to the hot and growing virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) roles. Maybe you currently look after one now and want to validate your skill set. The skills to maintain, administer and design VDI are finally recognized. Prior to the desktop track you could explain to someone you had VDI knowledge but there was no real way to demonstrate that ? well now you do!

Cloud

Cloud? Everyone is talking cloud. They are usually talking about different things as well. VCP-IaaS is specific to operating a vCloud Director cloud. It?s truly the hottest thing going right now in terms of virtualization. This skill set is hard to find. Putting this certification on your resume will garner instant recognition in the industry. Am I telling you to take it? No. If you are interested in a career among the clouds you should consider it though. This path is, at this time, fairly diverged from the desktop path in terms of technology. That?s why I said I?m not telling you to take it. You can have a very healthy career both in infrastructure and VDI and not certify in cloud.

The Exams

The nice thing about the VCP paths is all the exams are the same basic format; death by multiple choice. There is the odd drag-and-drop style question you may run into; it?s essentially a different kind of multiple choice question. An example of this is when you are given a question, have 5 options on the left and have to drag them in to 3 slots on the right. All of the VCP exams are scored out of 500 and you must achieve a score of 300 to pass. Not all questions are equal, but VMware won?t tell anyone the secret sauce for which ones are worth more. It?s safe to assume the drag-and-drops are worth a bit more, but as to which multiple choice question is worth more than another is not known. There are usually 80-100 multiple choice questions. The number will vary on the VCP type, which exact version of exam and perhaps which way the wind is blowing.

So, now you may ask ?That?s great information, Matt, but what should I do to actually get started in VMware certifications?? That?s a great question, and I will give you my advice ? if you are new go for the DV. It?s the basis for the other two and really is an important topic to understand to be successful in the other technologies. If you are one of those that already have your VCP-DV and are interested in the other tracks, the procedure below is the same minus the course pre-req.

VCP Steps:

1. Taking the VCP-DV requires that you take a course. Your options are below and really are dependent on your own level of comfort. You really can?t go wrong with the Install, Configure, and Manage course.
   1. VMware vSphere: Install, Configure, Manage [V5.0]
   2. VMware vSphere: Fast Track [V5.0]
   3. VMware vSphere: Optimize and Scale [V5.0]
2. Download the blueprint, this is available on the VMware site and gives and overview of what topics will be tested against.
3. Study the blueprint; I made this a separate note to emphasize the importance. Don?t just download and peruse the blueprint ? study it!
4. Read the documents listed in the blueprint ? there will be a bunch. Try your best to review them all.
5. Read/watch/listen some more! There are many great resources out there to assist you. Trainsignal has some fantastic courses, there are vBrownBags that you can listen too, and more blogs and books than you can shake a stick at. I know this sounds like a lot, but this will assist in your day to day activities as an admin as well as help you prepare for the exam.
6. Practice. Get a lab going somewhere ? whether that be at work, at home or a buddy?s house. VMware is good at testing practical knowledge that is easiest to come by with practice. Try to do all the things you have previously read, watched or listened to.
7. Relax. By this time you have got this!
8. Write the exam. Get a good night sleep. No late night cramming. Relax and just get it done.

The last point I want to re-emphasize? just get it done. Do not fear the exam. Prepare for it and you will not have any problems. Do not procrastinate; once you make the commitment to attend the course follow through with achieving the certification. It is very easy to let this slip off your radar and just go about your daily routine. The point of achieving this exam is not just the letters you can append after your name in your email signature. The point is to increase your knowledge and improve your skills; it?s as much the journey as the destination. Reward yourself for your hard work with a fancy certificate and free copy of VMware Workstation (your VCP prize from VMware).

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Pakistan (AP) ? A bombing claimed by the Taliban killed at least six people and wounded some 90 others at a Shiite religious procession in northwestern Pakistan on Sunday, police said, as the minority Muslim sect observes the annual Ashoura holiday.

Since Wednesday, at least 31 have been killed in bombings aimed at Pakistani Shiites and claimed by the Taliban, who espouse an extremist interpretation of Sunni Islam. Over 100 were wounded in the attacks during the run-up to the holiday, which commemorates the 7th century death of the Prophet Muhammad's grandson. The schism between Sunnis and Shiites dates back to that time.

Sunday's explosion went off as hundreds of Shiites were passing through the main intersection of the city of Dera Ismail Khan, police said, where food and water stalls were set up to serve the crowd. An initial investigation suggested a bomb was planted near a shop along the procession route.

"The bomb contained about eight kilograms of explosives and steel balls, and was detonated with a remote control device," city police chief Sohail Khalid said.

Several of injured are in serious condition, said Dr. Faridullah Mahsud, an official at the city's hospital, who added that three members of a paramilitary unit providing security for the procession were among the injured. Dr. Khalid Aziz, the top official at the hospital, put the death toll at six.

The Pakistani Taliban frequently attack Shiites, who they consider heretics. Ashoura ceremonies are a prime targets, since they draw large crowds that march in processions to mourn the martyred Imam Hussein. Early in the day, participants beat their chests in grief over Hussein's killing, while later some cut themselves to express their sorrow in blood.

Qais Abbas, a Shiite survivor, said that one of his relatives was in critical condition, but that he and others were moving the wounded to other hospitals that were better equipped.

"Here we are not getting proper care for them, there are not enough doctors or medicines," he said.

After the blast, thousands of Shiite mourners staged a sit-in at a nearby intersection, refusing to move unless assured quick and stern action against the perpetrators. The procession has now been attacked for a second consecutive day.

A similar bombing killed seven and injured 30 from the group a day earlier, and last week attacks on Ashoura observers took place elsewhere in the country. On Wednesday night, a Taliban suicide bomber struck a Shiite procession in Rawalpindi, a garrison city near the capital, Islamabad, killing 17. Earlier that same day, the Taliban set off two bombs outside a Shiite mosque in the southern city of Karachi, killing one person and wounding 15 others. Pakistani Taliban have claimed responsibility for all the attacks, with spokesman Ehasanullah Ehsan saying by telephone on Sunday that the group will not relent and "looks forward to more ahead."

Authorities have deployed thousands of additional police across the country to beef up security for the holy day. Mobile phone service has been shut down in all the major cities to prevent such bombings, which officials say often use cellular phones as remote detonators.

As for that Thanksgiving dinner, it turned out to be a huge revenge plot of its own orchestrated by Victoria against her mother for years of terrible behavior. The dysfunction in this family runs deep.

Ohio State Beats Michigan 26-21: Buckeyes Complete Undefeated Season

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? The only thing Urban Meyer lost during his first season at Ohio State was his cool ? at the end of the last game.

Carlos Hyde ran for 146 yards and the fourth-ranked Buckeyes' defense shut out No. 20 Michigan in the second half to grab a bruising 26-21 win on Saturday, completing an improbable 12-0 season for the Buckeyes.

Meyer got emotional as the final seconds ticked off, embracing his players on the sideline at a raucous Ohio Stadium. Too emotional, he said later.

"I've got to keep a little more composure, I guess," he said sheepishly. "In the coaching manual, I think it's chapter 13, it says, `Keep cool.' I lost it there for a couple of minutes."

Well, give the guy a break.

Almost no one ? up to and including Meyer ? expected such a rapid turnaround for the Buckeyes, who were just 6-7 last season with a loss to their archrivals in a transitional year when they were facing heavy NCAA penalties. A month after Meyer took the job last November, they were socked with a bowl ban after this season ? and still ran the table.

"You get all the wins you can, especially against the Team Up North, especially at home on top of that," said exuberant Buckeyes quarterback Braxton Miller.

Ohio State (12-0, 8-0 Big Ten) is ineligible for a BCS national title but still has an outside shot at finishing No. 1 in the final Associated Press Top 25 if other contenders lose. Michigan (8-4, 6-2) will now await a minor bowl bid.

"At this point in time, Ohio State can go and play with anybody in America," Meyer said. "I wouldn't say that five weeks ago, but you've seen the growth, what we did today and the growth of our defense."

Drew Basil matched his season output with four field goals and the defense did the rest, forcing three turnovers in the second half.

It was played before 105,899, the largest crowd ever to witness "The Game" in Columbus.

Meyer and his players were mobbed by thousands of fans who flooded the field after the Buckeyes' ninth victory in the last 11 years in the rivalry (the 2010 win was later vacated by the sanctions).

The crush of people precluded Michigan's Brady Hoke from the traditional postgame handshake with Meyer.

"No big deal. Not a big deal," Hoke said over his shoulder as he left his postgame news conference. "Not a story."

Hyde also ran for a touchdown. Miller completed 14 of 18 passes for 189 yards and a score to Corey Brown, who had eight catches for 95 yards.

The Buckeyes had already clinched the Big Ten's Leaders Division, but aren't allowed to play in next Saturday's conference title game. Michigan needed a win to capture a share of the Legends Division with Nebraska, which will meet Wisconsin for the championship.

Hoke had won his first game as a head coach in the rivalry.

"I like the W better," he said.

Now, about all Ohio State can hope for is that every other top team in the nation ? including the only other unbeaten, top-ranked Notre Dame ? loses and loses badly. A team banned from the postseason has never finished No. 1 in the AP Top 25 poll, and the Buckeyes are not eligible for the Bowl Championship Series rankings or coaches' poll.

Michigan's Denard Robinson had a brilliant first half, scoring on a 67-yard run, but was largely invisible in the second. He totaled 122 yards on 10 carries, but had lost 2 yards on his four carries after halftime.

"We know the reason we lost the game," Robinson said. "We had three turnovers in the second half. That's not acceptable."

Devin Gardner, the other half of Michigan's quarterback tandem, was 11 of 20 for 171 yards with an interception and a 75-yard touchdown pass to Roy Roundtree.

For the Buckeyes, the game will be remembered for the staunch defense played when most needed. Michigan had 26 plays for 219 yards in the first half, then ran 21 plays for a net of 60 yards in the second.

"It feels great," defensive back Christian Bryant said. "Taking it out for the seniors ? that was our motto for the season ? and that's what we did."

For the Wolverines, there will be lingering questions for Hoke, who wore short sleeves in the freezing temperatures ? just like Woody Hayes used to during the 1960s and 1970s in the rivalry.

With his team ahead 21-20, Hoke called timeout on fourth and 2 near midfield on Michigan's first possession of the second half. Robinson then tried the middle, but ran into linebacker Ryan Shazier for a two-yard loss.

That cost the Wolverines the lead as Ohio State drove to the Michigan 11 before settling for Basil's 28-yard field goal, putting the Buckeyes up 23-21.

"We've got to have each other's back," Hoke said. "We didn't get it and (our own) defense went out there and did a nice job."

Gardner fumbled when hit by Johnathan Hankins with 8:19 left, with Travis Howard pouncing on the loose ball after several players had a shot at it. Taking over at the Wolverines' 10, the Buckeyes could not move the ball and were forced to settle for Basil's fourth field goal of the game, a 25-yarder with 6:26 remaining, for a 26-21 lead.

Basil came into the game just 4 for 6 on the year.

The last turnover ended the Wolverines' hopes.

Gardner tossed a floater that was intercepted by C.J. Barnett, ending the Wolverines final threat as Hyde carried the ball repeatedly and the Buckeyes played keep-away to the finish.

Between the first and second quarters, Ohio State honored its 2002 national championship team. After a highlight clip was shown to a roaring crowd, several players hoisted coach Jim Tressel to their shoulders and carried him out of the end zone.

No boos were heard, or else they were drowned out ? even though it was Tressel's NCAA violations, he failed to report players exchanging team memorabilia for cash and tattoos, which will keep this year's unbeaten Buckeyes home in the postseason.

Asked if ? should his team end up as the only unbeaten in the nation ? it should be crowned No. 1 in the AP poll, Meyer said: "I'm not going to get into the `what ifs.' You can't control what you can't control. ... We're 12-0 and I'm going to see to it when you walk into that Woody Hayes (practice) facility that this team will never be forgotten. Because they deserve that."

Samsung wins U.S. court order to access Apple-HTC deal details

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - A U.S. judge has ordered Apple Inc to disclose to rival Samsung Electronics details of a legal settlement the iPhone maker reached with Taiwan's HTC Corp, including terms of a 10-year patents licensing agreement.

The Korean electronics giant had earlier filed a motion to compel its U.S. rival -- with whom it is waging a bitter legal battle over mobile patents across several countries -- to reveal details of the settlement that was reached on November 10 with HTC but which have been kept under wraps.

In August, the iPhone maker won a $1.05 billion verdict against Samsung after a U.S. jury found that certain Samsung gadgets violated Apple's software and design patents.

Now, legal experts say the question of which patents are covered by the Apple-HTC settlement, and licensing details, could be instrumental in Samsung's efforts to thwart Apple's subsequent quest for a permanent sales ban on its products.

The Asian company has argued it is "almost certain" that the HTC deal covers some of the same patents involved in its own litigation with Apple.

The court on Wednesday ordered Apple to produce a full copy of the settlement agreement "without delay", subject to an Attorneys-Eyes-Only designation.

Representatives for the U.S. company could not immediately be reached for comment.

Samsung also requested the California court to add three newly released Apple products -- the iPod Touch 5, the iPad 4 and the iPad mini -- to the list of devices that it claims to have infringed on some of its patents, according to court documents.

The settlement of Apple and HTC ended their worldwide litigation and brought to a close one of the first major flare-ups in the global smartphone patent wars.

Apple first sued HTC in 2010, setting in motion a legal conflagration that has since circled the globe and engulfed the biggest names in mobile technology, from Samsung to Google Inc's Motorola Mobility unit.
