Iowa race shifts from persuasion to mobilization

(AP) ? In the race for Iowa, Republican presidential candidates are shifting from persuading people to mobilizing them to attend Tuesday's caucuses.

None of the candidates has the extensive get-out-the-vote network that helped former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee win in 2008. But Mitt Romney and Ron Paul have strengthened the organizations they had in place for their failed bids four years ago. The cash-strapped others, including Rick Santorum, have more modest efforts and are mostly relying on momentum to carry their supporters to the caucuses on what could be a chilly night.

"This isn't the Huckabee year," said Susan Geddes, a socially conservative Iowa activist and top staffer on that Republican's campaign.

With the race fluid, all the campaigns are working to ensure their backers vote at the caucuses, where turnout of 120,000 would break the record set in 2008. Volunteer armies already are knocking on countless doors and making countless phone calls to get Iowans to the community meetings where they will take the first step toward picking a president.

The candidates, themselves, are making final appeals as they canvass the state.

"If you can get out here in this cold and this wind and a little bit of rain coming down, then you can sure get out on Tuesday night and you can sure find a few people to bring with you," Romney told a crowd on a dreary Friday morning in West Des Moines.

Hours later in Waterloo, Rick Perry implored: "I need you to brave the weather. I need you to come out and support us. If you have my back on Tuesday, January the third, then I will have your back in Washington for the next four years."

It's about this time every four years that scores of Christian home-school activists, pastors and other cultural conservatives fan out across the state to corral people to caucus on behalf of their chosen candidate. This year, that coalition ? which lifted the late-charging outsider Huckabee to victory four years ago ? is dividing its support among many candidates, including Santorum, Perry, Newt Gingrich and Michele Bachmann. None of them have had the time or money necessary to build strong operations.

That leaves the two Republicans, Romney and Paul, who are leading in polls but aren't favorites of devout social conservatives, as the candidates in the best position to get their backers to the caucuses in the traditional way ? by relying on their grass-roots supporters and precinct captains. If either triumphs here, organization will be partly the reason.

Romney's Iowa headquarters, a former Blockbuster Video store near downtown, was abuzz Friday.

By noon, Jason Russett, of Des Moines, a Romney supporter from 2008, said he had called 60 people who have agreed to represent Romney in their precinct "in some fashion" to make sure they had packets that include a Romney campaign T-shirt and caucus-night talking points. About a dozen other volunteers were using laptops to auto-dial numbers in some of the state's 1,774 precincts.

Although he has a much smaller paid staff in Iowa than four years ago, Romney has relied heavily on volunteer assistance from top-level 2008 supporters. With a focus on retaining old supporters rather than recruiting new ones, Romney has spent the year quietly reconnecting with many of the roughly 30,000 Republicans who voted for him before. And he's armed with a voter database leftover from his last $10 million Iowa campaign, while all opponents but Paul have had to hurry to build theirs from scratch.

Romney stepped up his outreach to past supporters in recent days as polls showed him in contention.

He spent the week campaigning primarily in the eastern Iowa areas he won four years ago. Huge crowds turned out.

"If his turnout here this week is any indication, he's in very good shape here," Muscatine County GOP Chairman Mark LeRette, who supports Santorum, said of Romney. "He's the defending champ here. I expect him to win Muscatine County."

In more conservative parts of the state, Romney dispatched surrogates like South Dakota Sen. John Thune and had former Kansas Sen. Bob Dole, 88, dialing key activists in eastern Iowa. By video on Friday, Romney implored Iowans to show up Tuesday and vote for him.

Paul, for his part, has methodically built local support networks across the state and has hundreds of precinct-level leaders prepared to stand up and speak Tuesday on the Texas congressman's behalf. His team, which includes members of local and state GOP committees, has been executing a far more robust effort than when his small organization helped him finish fifth in 2008.

Polls show more likely Iowa caucus-goers have been contacted by Paul's campaign than any other.

And the outreach is only just beginning.

In recent days, an influx of out-of-state volunteers, mainly college-age supporters, descended on the state to help as Paul's team dispatches local supporters to knock on doors and convene local meetings to encourage turnout. It's unclear whether Paul's popularity among younger voters will translate into votes. In 2004, Democrat Howard Dean attracted younger supporters, who ultimately failed to deliver for Dean on caucus night.

"Now, the key is personal touch," said Drew Ivers, Paul's Iowa campaign director. "Email is pretty lame, so are automated calls. What really counts is neighbor-to-neighbor contact."

But don't count on the candidate himself to do that. At events, Paul never asks for anyone's vote.

Santorum, meanwhile, could end up being the surprise.

The former Pennsylvania senator scoured Iowa for the past two years, testing the notion that building personal bonds with voters is the key to victory Tuesday ? even if there's little organization to back it up. He's begun to emerge in recent days as the preferred social conservative and, if evangelical backers and home-school activists spontaneously coalesce behind him in the coming days, strategists say he could win, even without much of an organization.

Perry, the Texas governor, is viewed by strategists as having an aggressive ground operation with the most staff. He's advertised most aggressively, spending more than $3 million on 12 TV ads since November. He's also advertising on Pandora, a popular Internet radio station in a show of his campaign's new-media savvy.

But Perry's late entry into the race in August has forced him to raise money and travel to other early states, slowing his ability to build grass-roots support in Iowa.

Gingrich, the former House speaker, always had a skeleton campaign in Iowa and struggled to build upon it when his support rose in November and early December. He had said he was hoping to mobilize supporters in part through online turnout efforts. But that never really materialized, and Gingrich has lost momentum after a barrage of attacks from Paul's campaign and Romney allies.

Still, more than 68 percent of likely caucus-goers in an NBC/Marist Poll this week say they have been contacted by Gingrich's campaign ? the same total as Romney's. Perry and Paul have higher contact rates.

Bachmann, the Minnesota congresswoman, is hardly a factor. She struggled to retain the support of the evangelical base that helped her win the August presidential straw poll in Iowa. Yet, she raced through Iowa's 99 counties in two weeks, making quick stops in order to shoot video being distributed by email to local activists this weekend.

Polls: Romney leading Obama, Santorum rising (Daily Caller)

A new Rasmussen poll shows former Gov. Mitt Romney with a six-point lead over President Obama, while another indicates Iowa caucus-goers really are giving former Sen. Rick Santorum another look.

According to the first poll, the former Massachusetts governor leads Obama 45 percent to 39 percent, with 10 percent preferring another candidate and 6 percent undecided.

This is Romney?s best ever showing yet in a head-to-head matchup against Obama, and just one week ago Rasmussen said he was trailing the president by three points.

Romney?s perceived electability has been a key selling point for his campaign this year. A CNN/ORC poll released on Wednesday showed 41 percent of Iowa caucus-goers believe he would have the best chance of beating President Obama next fall.

In Iowa, Rasmussen has Romney narrowly leading the Republican field with 23 percent support, followed by Texas Rep. Ron Paul with 22 percent. As was the case in the CNN poll released on Wednesday, Santorum appears to have rocketed to third place with 16 percent support.

It?s not all good news for Santorum, however. The Washington Post?s Chris Cillizza notes that only 4 percent of Iowa caucus-goers believe he?s the Republican candidate with the best chance of beating Obama. And in a year when recapturing the White House is the foremost priority for the GOP, that skepticism may prove to be a major stumbling block to Santorum?s hopes of winning Iowa.

The margin of error for both Rasmussen polls in +/- 4.5 percent.

Baylor vs. Washington LIVE UPDATES: Robert Griffin III Highlights Alamo Bowl

He is asked. "I have no idea," he responds. And he calls the ESPN interrogator "sir" before excusing himself.

He falls to the ground and lays down, face down. But then he pops up and is articulate and confident and just all-around awesome.

Presumably coming from the Baylor band, the Superman theme music can be heard from the Alamodme. One more knee... and...

Griffin takes a knee. One more of those coming.

The clock is ticking under two minutes. Washington is out of timeouts.

Squib kick and big No. 71 comes rushing in to grab football. He fights for extra yards and pops out of pile to keep rumbling ahead. And then he FUMBLES! Baylor recovers. OK. maybe this will do it.

Ganaway breaks through the middle. Again. TOUCHDOWN BAYLOR. Again. Again. Again.

Ganaway runs right, picking up eight. Washington uses second timeout to stop clock. 2:36 remaining.

He skitters through and goes down in bounds. Clock stopped to move chains but starts up. Baylor lets it tick.

Price hit from his right as he set to throw, ball sails out of bounds to far side. Turnover on downs. 1st and 10 and Baylor is back on the ball. 3:20 remaining.

Time: 3:25 remaining Down: 4th Distance: 8

Yard Line: Baylor 39

Washington 56

Baylor 60

Washington calls a timeout.

Confusion over whether Price had a forward or backward pass as it bounces. Whistle dead although players were going for it.

Seems odd. But it leaves Washington facing a 3rd and 8.

After play fake, Price throws low for Aguilar, who dives but can't get a hold on it. 2nd and 10.

Jenkins jumps over defender and reaches out to pull in ball and wrestle it away. 1st at BAY 41.

While he's likely a gregarious fellow, he's shy of first down here. 3rd and 1.

Callier is stonewalled at line. 2nd and 10. Clock down to 5:47. Washington keeping ball on ground, keeping clock moving.

Rush to line out of huddle and Polk runs off right tackle and gets it. 1st and 10.

Speilman has been talking about it being four-down territory even though Wash is deep in their half. Seems a bit much with 6:35 remaning in a four-point game.

Baylor defense makes first contact early but pushes forward. 3rd and 2.

Washington starting at their own 22 with a delayed handoff. Short gain. 2nd and 8.

Apple applies for facial recognition patent, wants to let iDevices get to know you better

Your momma always said your handsome mug would take you places. Now it might allow you to access your iPad. An Apple patent application released today describes a facial recognition system that requires minimal computing power, and works whether you're indoors or out -- we don't use our tablets and phones in a photo booth, after all. The technology works by comparing a current image of your mug to a reference model user profile made using "high information" portions of the human face, like eyes and mouths. Translation: it'll take a picture, compare it against the pictures associated with various user accounts on the device and decide if the two images are similar enough to grant you access. Because this is just an application, it's safe to say we won't be seeing this kind of facial recognition in iOS anytime soon, but let's hope it works better than the ICS version if it does.

Update: An important thing to note is that Apple applied for this patent long before Android's Face Unlock debuted a few months back. The paperwork was first submitted on June 29th, 2010 -- it's just now being disclosed to the public.

Nintendo 3DS news roundup: early 2012 lineup revealed, DLC coming, sales exceed 4 million in Japan (Digital Trends)

?

Nintendo-3DSWe?ve been a little light on Nintendo 3DS news lately, but things continue to look up for the once struggling handheld. Sources report that Nintendo will offer downloadable content (DLC) for the first time in 2012, hardware sales have eclipsed 4 million units in Japan, and Satoru Iwata has revealed Nintendo?s upcoming game lineup for early 2012.

DLC coming to Fire Emblem:?Nintendo added support for DLC within games in a system update earlier this year, but no games have been released that take advantage of the new functionality. That will soon change. According to Nikkei (via 1UP), Fire Emblem for 3DS will have some form of downloadable content in March. Third parties are expected to begin bringing paid DLC content to 3DS titles by summer. Wii U will also have paid DLC support.

3DS sales exceed 4 million in Japan: Enterbrain (via Famitsu) reports that Nintendo 3DS sales in Japan have exceeded 4 million units in only 10 months. The Nintendo DS, by comparison, reached 5 million units in its first 13 months, but it had two holiday seasons to boost those sales. Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 have each sold more than 1 million copies.?

3DS 2012 Japan lineup: Nintendo President Satoru Iwata gave a direct broadcast over UStream the other day, where he revealed a few details about upcoming games, like Fire Emblem. Below is a list of games coming to the 3DS (in Japan) in the next few months.?

  • Ghost Camera ? Jan. 12
  • Ace Combat 3D ? Jan. 12
  • Rhythm Thief R ? Jan. 19
  • Beyond the Labyrinth ? Jan. 19
  • Resident Evil Revelations ? Jan. 26
  • Tekken 3D Prime Edition ? Feb. 16
  • Theatrhythm Final Fantasy ? Feb. 16
  • Harvest Moon: Hajimari no Daichi ? Feb. 23
  • New Love Plus ? Feb 24
  • Mario & Sonic at London Olympics ? March 1
  • Metal Gear Solid 3D ? March 8
  • Hatsune Miku and Future Stars Project Mirai ? March 8
  • Girl?s RPG (by Level-5) ? March 8
  • Dynasty Warriors VS ? March 15
  • Kid Icarus Uprising ? March 22
  • Fire Emblem: Awakening ? April 19

Not a bad lineup. Let?s hope the US release list is as robust. Do any of these games look good? I?m intrigued by a new Harvest Moon, though the series has been getting repetitive in recent years.?

US wants 2012 talks for Taliban political office

(AP) ? The Obama administration hopes to restore momentum in the spring to U.S. talks with the Taliban insurgency that had reached a critical point before falling apart this month because of objections from Afghan President Hamid Karzai, U.S. and Afghan officials said.

One goal of renewed talks with the insurgents would be to identify cease-fire zones that could be used as a steppingstone toward a full peace agreement that stops most fighting, a senior administration official told The Associated Press ? a goal that remains far out of reach.

U.S. officials from the State Department and White House plan to continue a series of secret meetings with Taliban representatives in Europe and the Persian Gulf region next year, assuming a small group of Taliban emissaries the U.S. considers legitimate remains willing, two officials said.

The U.S. officials spoke on condition of anonymity to describe the sensitive and precarious U.S. outreach to the Taliban leadership.

The U.S. outreach to the Taliban this year had fits and starts but had progressed to the point that there was active discussion of two steps the Taliban seeks as precursors to negotiations, the senior U.S. official said. Talks are on an unofficial hiatus at Karzai's request, U.S. and other officials said.

Those trust-building measures were a Taliban headquarters office and the release from the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, of about five Afghan prisoners considered affiliated with the Taliban. Those steps were to be matched by assurances from at least part of the Taliban leadership that the insurgents would cut ties with al-Qaida, accept the elected civilian government of Afghanistan and bargain in good faith.

The Taliban office idea is seen the most likely to regain traction next year, but it's unclear when it might open. A political office in a neutral third country would be authorized to conduct talks on a peaceful end to the 10-year war.

Karzai remains opposed to the more difficult prisoner transfer plan, which is further complicated by new congressional restrictions on any prisoner transfers.

The U.S. tentatively had agreed to transfer a handful of Afghan prisoners to house arrest in a third country, probably Qatar, before the deal unraveled, U.S. officials said.

The Associated Press has learned the identity of some of the proposed transferees, including Khairullah Khairkhwa, former Taliban governor of Herat, and Mullah Mohammed Fazl, a former top Taliban military commander believed responsible for sectarian killings before the U.S. invasion that toppled the Taliban government in Afghanistan in 2001.

Karzai's own advisers seeking peace with the Taliban had named those men among several Afghan Taliban prisoners it wanted released from Guantanamo as a goodwill gesture, but Karzai wants the prisoners to come to Afghanistan, not a third country, a senior Afghan official in the region said.

Sending Afghans to an Arab country could offend Afghans' sense of sovereignty and suggest that the U.S. does not think Afghanistan is fit to hold or try the men, officials said.

"As soon as I was released, I met President Karzai and he promised that he would not allow Afghan prisoners to be sent anywhere except Afghanistan," said Haji Ruhollah, an Afghan who was released from Guantanamo in 2010. "They are all Afghans and they should be brought and kept in Afghanistan."

U.S. and Afghan officials also pointed to Karzai's longstanding unease with what he sees as a rush by the U.S. to broker deals ahead of the planned exit of U.S. combat forces by 2015. Karzai has political problems at home, including newly resurgent militias, and the assassination of his chief peace negotiator in September clouds his own outreach to the Taliban.

The U.S. once swore off direct talks with the Taliban until the insurgents essentially were beaten but shifted position as the war dragged on in near stalemate. Participants said they still consider a peace deal a long shot, and the insurgent leadership has shown no sign it wants to stop fighting a guerrilla war it thinks it can sustain until after most foreign forces depart.

The Associated Press is not identifying U.S. officials involved in the direct talks in consideration of their safety. One member of the Taliban negotiating team has been publicly identified as Tayyab Aga, an emissary of Pakistan-based Taliban leader Mullah Mohammed Omar. Other participants include a former Taliban ambassador to Saudi Arabia and a former Taliban deputy health minister, the senior Afghan official said.

The U.S. goal is to midwife talks between the insurgents and the U.S.-backed Afghan government led by Karzai, who frequently has felt sidelined by the U.S. as it pursues talks with his enemies. He bills peace talks as an Afghan-led process, which the U.S. insists is also its goal. The U.S. outreach is meant to jump-start negotiations, U.S. officials have said, but they acknowledge that their efforts can feed the perception that Karzai is not fully in charge.

Although the Karzai government shares the goal of outreach and eventual political reconciliation with the Afghan Taliban movement, he resents the insurgents' demand only to speak with what they call American occupiers. He has argued that the U.S. undercuts his leverage, and his inner circle derailed initial U.S.-Taliban talks earlier this year, several officials previously told the AP.

Karzai has supported the general idea of an office, preferably in Afghanistan, but he balked when the plan for Qatar appeared to have been settled without him, officials said. Earlier this month, Kabul recalled its ambassador to Qatar for consultations over reports that the Taliban was planning to open an office there.

An Afghan official, who could not be identified because of the sensitivity of the issue, said at the time that the ambassador was recalled because Qatar had not consulted with them throughout the process. The Afghan government supports the establishment of an office for the Taliban only as a facilitative step in the peace process, not as any kind of a concession to them, the official said.

On Tuesday, Karzai backed down. He said his government would accept the Qatar office to hold peace talks, although Saudi Arabia or Turkey would be preferable venues.

If the United States insists that the insurgents establish a liaison office in Qatar, "we are agreed," Karzai said in a presidential statement.

Karzai's preference for Saudi Arabia or Turkey over Qatar is based on his belief that the Saudis can be trusted and their status as an established Muslim power broker, the senior Afghan official said. Turkey is a neighbor of Afghanistan and already involved in international efforts to stabilize the country.

Karzai and his inner circle think the tiny gas-rich Arab state of Qatar is not a strong Muslim country and is not particularly close to Afghanistan, the official said.

Sterling baseball team wins Legion title

STERLING --There were four teams that brought home state titles over the course of the year. And one of them was in the summer. The Sterling B Legion team hosted the state tournament on the Northeastern Junior College campus and put together great win after great win to take the title.

It was a fun moment. The fact that it occurred after the end of the regular high school baseball season did not lessen its significance at all. In fact, in many ways it made it seem more important. It was a long season. And while every team is close, there is something to be said for the summer baseball players who play for so long and so hard and through all the hot weather.

Coach Josh Wilson, the assistant coach on the Sterling high school baseball team, pulled the full potential out of his players. That was important as the team was whittled at throughout the tournament due to injuries and other obligations.

One of the biggest losses was Luke Engelhaupt, who injured his ankle sliding into second.

Freshmen stepped in and showed up big with Ty Lucero and and James Skerjanec both contributing in the final game.

Chaz Myers threw one of the best games he had in his high school career to give his team the edge. He wasn't the only Tiger who stood out from the pack. Brendan Diaz was named as the most valuable hitter, hitting a .643 on the tournament. But the MVP went to catcher Wyatt Nelson, who fought off the heat fatigue that normally plagues others at his position as the temperatures climbed above 100 and had a 1.000 fielding percentage. He also hit over .500 on the tournament.

All in all, the heat, the sweat and grime, the sheer length of the tournament, was worth it as the team brought home the title.

On a personal note, it was the first major event that I was out to cover after the birth of my son. Still very sleep deprived, the team, the coaches, and the parents all stepped up and gave me a lot of help to make sure I could get the best coverage out of the event that I could. Not just on the Sterling side either. Fleming was still in the mix up until the end and they helped in equal portion.

Sea snails help scientists explore a possible way to enhance memory

Tuesday, December 27, 2011

Efforts to help people with learning impairments are being aided by a species of sea snail known as Aplysia californica. The mollusk, which is used by researchers to study the brain, has much in common with other species including humans. Research involving the snail has contributed to the understanding of learning and memory.

At The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth), neuroscientists used this animal model to test an innovative learning strategy designed to help improve the brain's memory and the results were encouraging. It could ultimately benefit people who have impairments resulting from aging, stroke, traumatic brain injury or congenital cognitive impairments.

The proof-of-principle study was published on the Nature Neuroscience website on Dec. 25. The next steps in the research may involve tests in other animal models and eventually humans.

The strategy was used to identify times when the brain was primed for learning, which in turn facilitated the scheduling of learning sessions during these peak periods. The result was a significant increase in memory.

"We found that memory could be enhanced appreciably," said John H. "Jack" Byrne, Ph.D., senior author and chair of the Department of Neurobiology and Anatomy at the UTHealth Medical School.

Building on earlier research that identified proteins linked to memory, the investigators created a mathematical model that tells researchers when the timing of the activity of these proteins is aligned for the best learning experience.

Right now, the scheduling of learning sessions is based on trial and error and is somewhat arbitrary. If the model proves effective in follow-up studies, it could be used to identify those periods when learning potential is highest.

"When you give a training session, you are starting several different chemical reactions. If you give another session, you get additional effects. The idea is to get the sessions in sync," Byrne said. "We have developed a way to adjust the training sessions so they are tuned to the dynamics of the biochemical processes."

Two groups of snails received five learning sessions. One group received learning sessions at irregular intervals as predicted by a mathematical model. Another group received training sessions in regular 20-minute intervals.

Five days after the learning sessions were completed, a significant increase in memory was detected in the group that was trained with a schedule predicted by a computer. But, no increase was detected in the group with the regular 20-minute intervals.

The computer sorted through 10,000 different permutations in order to determine a schedule that would enhance memory.

To confirm their findings, researchers analyzed nerve cells in the brain of snails and found greater activity in the ones receiving the enhanced training schedule, said Byrne, the June and Virgil Waggoner Chair of Neurobiology and Anatomy at UTHealth.

"This study shows the feasibility of using computational methods to assist in the design of training schedules that enhance memory," Byrne said.

Appeals court: Ark. can't stop desegregation funds

(AP) ? Arkansas cannot cut off millions of dollars in funding for desegregation programs in Little Rock-area school districts until a challenge to the payments gets a separate federal court hearing, an appeals court ruled Wednesday.

The ruling from the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals comes months after U.S. District Judge Brian Miller ordered an end to most of the payments, calling them counterproductive. He accused three school districts of delaying desegregation to continue getting state money and agreed with state lawmakers who argue the payments are wasteful.

The appeals court, which heard the case in September after the districts challenged the order, ruled Miller's conclusion may have merit but that he did not make "specific findings of fact" to support his decision.

Rather, Miller "stated in general terms that a carrot and stick approach would no longer work with 'these districts' because the districts 'are wise mules that have learned how to eat the carrot and sit down on the job,'" the appeals court wrote.

The court also said a formal hearing on the evidence must be held and notice issued before a court can end desegregation obligations.

Arkansas is required by a 1989 settlement to fund magnet schools, transfers between districts and other programs to support desegregation and keep a racial balance in the Little Rock, North Little Rock and Pulaski County school districts. The state has been spending about $38 million a year to comply with the settlement, according to Wednesday's ruling.

Lawmakers have long wanted to end the payments, but the districts say they're still necessary.

Battles over school desegregation in Little Rock date back to 1957, when nine black children needed the protection of federal troops to integrate Central High School. Little Rock sued the state and its two neighboring districts in 1982. Two years later, a judge agreed the districts hadn't done enough to help the city schools desegregate.

In May, when Miller ordered an end to most of the state payments, he wrote that the change was necessary in order to avoid "an absurd outcome in which the districts are rewarded with extra money from the state if they fail to comply with their desegregation plans and they face having their funds cut by the state if they act in good faith and comply."

MEXICO CITY (AP) ? Mexican character actor Pedro Armendariz Jr. died Monday at the age of 71. There was no immediate confirmation of the cause of death.

Armendariz was best known for playing sly, sometimes cynical characters he endowed with wit and charisma. Armendariz played Gov. Riley in the 2005 movie "The Legend of Zoro," and had roles in 1989's "Old Gringo" and "Once Upon a Time in Mexico" in 2003.

President Felipe Calderon's office issued a statement lamenting Armendariz' death, calling him "a great actor who reflected well on Mexico at home and abroad."

The Mexican government news agency Notimex reported he died in New York City of cancer, but said his family had asked for their privacy to be respected.

He acted in more than 100 films, including the Mexican hit "The Crime of Father Amaro."

Consuelo Saizar, the president of Mexico's National Arts Council, lamented the death of Armendariz in her twitter account.

He had been married and divorced twice and is survived by several children.

Armendariz' father bore the same name and was a movie star during the "golden age" of Mexican films in the 1940s and 50s.

Xavier's slide continues

Joston Thomas and the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors handed Xavier yet another post-brawl loss, relegating the reeling Musketeers to the seventh-place game in the Diamond Head Classic.

Thomas made a layup from the baseline with 0.8 seconds left in overtime to give Hawaii an 84-82 comeback victory over No.?14 Xavier late Friday night, the Musketeers' third consecutive loss since a bench-clearing brawl Dec. 10 against Cincinnati.

Down by 15 early in the second half of the consolation semifinal, Hawaii tied it at 77 on Hauns Brereton's 3-pointer from the top of the key with 2.0 seconds left in regulation.

Thomas finished with a career-high 24 points on 8-of-11 shooting and had nine rebounds. Vander Joaquim added 20 points for Hawaii (6-5), Zane Johnson had 14, and Brereton 13.

The victory was Hawaii's first over a ranked team since it beat No.?4 Michigan State in November 2005.

A desperation heave by Xavier from about 75 feet as time expired was well short.

Tu Holloway led Xavier (8-3) with 26 points, Mark Lyons had 18 and Kenny Frease 13.

NBA

Heat waive House

The Heat waived veteran guard Eddie House, meaning rookies Mickell Gladness and Terrel Harris are on the 15-man roster to open the season.

House, 33, had left knee surgery last month and was deemed not yet ready to play.

House was drafted by the Heat in 2000 and has also played for the Los Angeles Clippers, Phoenix, New Jersey, Boston, Charlotte, Milwaukee, Sacramento and New York. House scored 35 points for Miami in the regular-season finale last season, a win at Toronto.

  • The Grizzlies have signed forward Dante Cunningham after the Charlotte Bobcats declined to match Memphis' offer to the restricted free agent. The team did not release terms of the deal. The Grizzlies also traded guard Greivis Vasquez (Maryland) to the New Orleans Hornets for guard/forward Quincy Pondexter in a move designed to boost their depth with Darrell Arthur out for the season.
  • The Oklahoma City Thunder waived guard Nate Robinson, who was a midseason acquisition from the Boston Celtics last season and appeared in four games for the Thunder. He averaged 3.3 points and 1.5 assists.

ELSEWHERE

  • Purdue has extended football coach Danny Hope's contract for two additional years, through Dec. 31, 2016. Details are being finalized. Purdue went 5-7 under Hope in 2009, then 4-8 in an injury-filled 2010. The Boilermakers (6-6) will play Western Michigan in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl on Dec. 27 at Ford Field in Detroit.
  • Orange Bowl officials said they've scrapped a planned sponsorship deal with Camacho Cigars. Larry Wahl, an Orange Bowl spokesman, said in an email that after mutual review, it was determined it would not be appropriate to go forward with the sponsorship.
  • Former Atalanta captain Cristiano Doni has reportedly acknowledged fixing Serie B soccer games in Italy involving his team and said his club knew nothing about it. Doni was among 16 people arrested across Italy on Monday in an investigation into match-fixing and illegal betting on games.

Demi Lovato Goes Off on Disney for Eating Disorder Joke

The folks at Disney forced Demi Lovato out of the Christmas spirit last night.

The former star of Sonny With a Chance - who left that series earlier this year to battle personal problems that included an eating disorder - took MAJOR exception to a joke on the Disney Channel show Shake It Up this week, as a character quipped:

"I could just eat you up, well if I ate."

Demi Lovato in Parade

The line promoted the following Tweets from Lovato:

I find it really funny how a company can lose one of their actress' from the pressures of an EATING DISORDER and yet still make joke about that very disease...

And is it just me or are the actress' [on Disney Channel] getting THINNER AND THINNER.... I miss the days of RAVEN, and LIZZIE MCGUIRE...

Dear Disney Channel, EATING DISORDERS ARE NOT SOMETHING TO JOKE ABOUT.

The network, meanwhile, has actually responded and agreed with Lovato, releasing the following statement:

"We hear you & are pulling both episodes as quickly as possible & reevaluating them ... It’s NEVER our intention to make light of eating disorders!"

Way to go, Demi! And happy holidays! Go stuff your face. You've earned it.

97% The Artist

All Critics (132) | Top Critics (37) | Fresh (128) | Rotten (4)

The Artist is the most surprising and delightful film of 2011.

A silent movie shot in sumptuous black-and-white, no less. A silent flick made with not a jot of distancing winking, but instead born of a heady affection for a bygone, very bygone, era of filmmaking.

It's a rocket to the moon fueled by unadulterated joy and pure imagination.

Strangely, wonderfully, The Artist feels as bold and innovative a moviegoing experience as James Cameron's bells-and-whistles Avatar did a couple of years ago.

"The Artist'' is a small, exquisitely-cut jewel in a style everyone assumes is 80 years out of date.

A beguiling tale about Hollywood's silent movie days that is itself silent, this made-in-L.A. French feature will charm cinephiles with its affection for one of the movies' golden ages.

...one of the most original films of this decade.

It's a valentine to the cinema that comes from the heart.

It's easy to dismiss The Artist as a simple love letter to the silent-film era, but there is a lot more at work here than just an attention-getting gimmick.

This film says a lot, without saying nearly any words. It's one of the best of 2011. (Content Review for Parents also available)

Not only does 'The Artist' clearly demonstrate that something was lost when movies started talking, but it also proves that we haven't begun to learn what can be done with images alone.

It may be silent, but The Artist earns some very loud applause

The Artist is a slight confection, really, but it's so delicious and knowing that it may well end up on any number of cineastes' desert-island lists. It's certainly on mine.

"The Artist" may be too cute to qualify as high art, but it's highly entertaining.

The story and the silent-era conventions may not be entirely original, but the director revives this uniquely American storytelling style with such infectious joy and life-affirming enthusiasm that it's nearly impossible not to respond in equal measure.

Essentially a stunt, but an expertly executed one that's immensely enjoyable, especially for movie buffs...a nimble, exuberant lark.

'The Artist' paints a glorious picture of old Hollyood.

In the more eye-pleasing The Artist, the plot eventually comes too close to its inspiration, though its early moments were headed for mastery - and transformation - of style.

Hazanavicius crafted more than a replica of the silent era... a masterwork that likely won't be imitated. How many movies in 2011 can you say that about? Only the best one.

"The Artist" is a delightful treasure. It is a charming mixture of comedy, melodrama and romance that cinema lovers should make a point of experiencing.

This is not some clinical dissection of bygone cinematic techniques; it's a lively, appealing effort that mostly rises above mere novelty.

It's about more than the gimmick, and The Artist will be calling to you, entrancing you and making you feel the love.

This is the feel-good movie of the year and that's meant as praise, not a putdown.

No less than a gushing ode to cinema itself. Unconditional bliss.

Distro Issue 19: Peter Rojas plays 20 questions and Zach Honig boards Boeing's 787 Dreamliner

If you caught our release of Distro for Android tablets, you know we're in the mood for giving. In keeping with that sentiment, issue 19 ushers in two new weekly (and exclusive) features: "Recommended Reading," a guide to the best writing happening outside of our fine publication(s), and "Q&A," our take on the Proust questionnaire, answered this week by Engadget founder Peter Rojas. Of course no issue of Distro would be complete without a generous collection of reviews, and this one's packed full: Zach Honig takes a ride on Boeing's 787 Dreamliner, Richard Lai covers Meizu's MX, Dana Wollman puts Samsung's Series 7 Slate PC through its paces, Tim Stevens tackles the Motorola Xyboard 8.2 and last, but most definitely not least, we examine Verizon's LTE Galaxy Nexus. It may not be your own private Watson, but it might just give you something to do between swigs of eggnog. So hit the appropriate download link and enjoy.

Steve Jobs on Gaming: It's the future of Learning [video]

By John Brownlee (10:46 am, Dec 22)

This video of Steve Jobs from 1990 is an interesting artifact for a couple of reasons.

For one thing, it?s the clip in which Steve pioneered his famous ?bicycle for the mind? analogy, which I?ve always felt is one of the most beautiful things ever said about computers.

What is also interesting, though, is how gung ho Steve Jobs is about video games in this clip, even going as far as to suggest that video games are the future of learning, and even the future of the Library of Congress.

What?s odd about this is that both Steve Jobs and Apple were fairly hostile to gaming on the Mac and even iOS until the iPod touch and the App Store showed them how lucrative it could be. Now iOS is the biggest handheld gaming platform in the world, but it wasn?t always that way, and Apple for years could literally have not given two figs for gaming.

In light of this, Steve Jobs?s perspective on gaming makes a lot more sense after watching this clip. He sees interactive simulation to be a key to learning, but not shooting aliens on Strogos. As such, the iPad is really the complete fulfillment of his dream for the computer as a gaming platform, isn?t it?
