Government of Canada Helps People With Disabilities Gain Job Skills in the Collingwood Area

COLLINGWOOD, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 25, 2012) - Dr. Kellie Leitch, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development and to Canada's Labour Minister and Member of Parliament for Simcoe-Grey, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development, today announced that Breaking Down Barriers An Independent Living Centre Inc. will receive more than $94,000 through the Government's Opportunities Fund for Persons with Disabilities.

"Investments like these are key to our government's top priority of job creation and economic growth. We believe that all Canadians should have the opportunity to obtain the skills they need to succeed in today's job market," said Dr. Leitch. "By supporting this program, our government is helping Canadians with disabilities in Ontario-specifically those in the Collingwood area-maximize their potential and independence."

This investment will help 34 people with disabilities develop a range of work skills needed to participate in the job market in the Collingwood area.

"Each year, we are able to assist at least 34 individuals with physical, sensory, emotional or intellectual disabilities to become employed or to gain the skills necessary to be more employable," said Ms. Andrea Abbott-Kokosin, Executive Director of Breaking Down Barriers. "We could not do this without the funding we receive from Human Resources and Skills Development Canada."

With assistance from the federal Opportunities Fund for Persons with Disabilities, the Breaking Down Barriers' Worklinks Employment Services program will help participants gain the skills they need to succeed in today's labour market.
