2 dead after bus crash at Fla. airport; 3 critical

MIAMI (AP) ? A bus carrying more than 30 people hit a concrete overpass at Miami International Airport, killing two people on board and leaving three others critically injured, officials said Saturday.

The large, white bus was too tall for the 8-foot-6-inch entrance to the arrivals area, said airport spokesman Greg Chin. Buses are supposed to go through the departures area, which has a higher ceiling, he said.

Two large signs warn drivers of large vehicles not to enter beneath the concrete overpass. One attached to the top of the concrete barrier reads: "High Vehicle STOP Turn Left." The other, placed to the left of the driveway several feet in front of the barrier, says all vehicles higher than the 8-foot-6 threshold must turn left.

Three people were at hospitals in critical condition. The other 27 passengers had been hurt, but their injuries were less extensive, authorities said.

Osvaldo Lopez, an officer with Miami-Dade aviation, said he first heard a loud noise Saturday morning and was certain it was some sort of car wreck.

He said he went inside the bus to help and found several passengers thrown into the center aisle. He said the passengers, many of whom were elderly, remained calm after the wreck.

"It was just very bloody," he said of the scene.

After helping the passengers, Lopez suffered some injuries of his own ? his left arm and a finger on his right hand were both bandaged.

The body of one dead passenger was pulled from the bus late Saturday morning; the second person died after being taken to a hospital, police said.

Fire trucks and police cars swarmed the area Saturday morning, and the bus was blocked off by yellow police tape. A white cooler that had been filled with water bottles was on its side behind the bus, the front of which remained wedged beneath the overpass Saturday.

The bus was privately owned and typically used for tours, though police believe all the passengers were local residents, not tourists, said Miami-Dade police Lt. Rosanna Cordero-Stutz. The bus' ultimate destination was not yet known, but the driver was unfamiliar with the area near the airport and did not intend to wind up at the arrivals area, Cordero-Stutz said. The driver was being interviewed by investigators, she said.

The bus was going about 20 mph when it hit the overpass Saturday morning, Chin said.

The bus resembles others commonly used for charters and tours, with the driver seated low to the ground and passenger seats in an elevated area behind the driver's seat.

Markings on the bus showed it was owned by Miami Bus Service Corp. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration records found online show the company has had no violations for unsafe driving or controlled substances and alcohol. It also has not reported any crashes in the two years before Oct. 26, 2012.

The records show it did receive three citations related to fatigued driving in April 2011.

The company owns three motorcoaches, according to the records. Miami Bus Service Corp. officials did not immediately respond to a phone message Saturday.

'Fiscal cliff' talks turn sour: Are prospects for deal vanishing?

House Speaker John Boehner charges that 'no substantive progress has been made' to avoid the Dec. 31 fiscal cliff, but such comments are a part of negotiating, an expert says.

Republicans stewed over the fact the White House has not offered them specific spending or entitlement changes. Democrats dismissed Republican complaints as empty posturing, saying that the GOP was on the verge of conceding to the Democratic goal of higher tax rates on the wealthy and that the onus is, in fact, on Republicans to spell out the entitlement and government spending reductions they seek.

Together, the statements by both parties end the brief honeymoon at the outset of negotiations and signal the ?push-back moment,? where each party publicly retrenches in hopes of getting more out of its adversary, and where the possibility of a deal could still break for better or worse, says Julian Zelizer, a congressional historian at Princeton University.

House Speaker John Boehner (R) of Ohio sounded the first sour note of what had been three weeks of "kumbaya" from Washington?s political leadership, a time when leaders of both parties have waxed eloquent about the need to work together to solve the pending fiscal cliff, some $600 billion in higher taxes and lower government spending scheduled to hit the economy beginning Jan. 1.

?Two weeks ago we had a very productive conversation at the White House. Based on where we stand today, I would say two things,? Speaker Boehner told reporters after his meeting with Secretary Geithner, the point person for the White House?s negotiations with Congress. ?First, despite claims that the president supports a ?balanced? approach, the Democrats have yet to get serious about real spending cuts. And secondly, no substantive progress has been made in the talks between the White House and the House over the last two weeks.?

The criticism that Mr. Obama has not laid out specific reductions to discretionary government spending or entitlement programs, such as Medicare, was also on the lips of Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell (R) of Kentucky.

?To date, the administration has remained focused on raising taxes and attending campaign-style events, with no specific plans to protect Medicare and Social Security or reduce our national debt in a meaningful way,? Senator McConnell said in a statement. ?And today, they took a step backward, moving away from consensus and significantly closer to the cliff.??

Bulgaria offers citizenship to foreign investors

SOFIA, Bulgaria (AP) ? Here's one way to boost an ailing economy: Bulgaria is offering citizenship to foreigners ready to invest at least half a million euros ($650,000).

Under a newly approved amendment, the candidates would have to invest in a Bulgarian company involved in a high-priority investment project in industry, infrastructure, transport or tourism. The investors are also required to have had residence status in the country for at least one year.

Bulgaria, which joined the 27-nation European Union in 2007 and is the bloc's poorest member, is trying to reverse the severe drop in foreign direct investment from ?6.55 billion ($8.5 billion) in 2008 to ?1.75 billion ($2.3 billion) in 2011.

Bulgaria already is handing out passports to ethnic Bulgarians outside its borders, the main beneficiaries being citizens of Macedonia, Serbia, Ukraine and Turkey ? countries with living standards at a fraction of the EU average that are years away from possible membership.

The latest amendments have been criticized harshly by the opposition, and did not get unequivocal support from the presidency or the Justice Ministry, the two institutions that deal with the issue of granting citizenship. According to media reports, the Interior Ministry and the security services have also voiced concerns about potential risks to national security during a closed-door parliament committee meeting.

The political and economic instability in the Middle East following the Arab Spring revolutions could prompt wealthy citizens trying to escape the region's troubles to qualify for the citizenship-by-investment program.

Other EU countries trying to cut public debt and attract foreign direct investment are also considering economic residency programs.

Spain is studying a plan to give residency to foreigners who buy a house or apartment worth ?160,000 ($207,800) or more. The country has more than 700,000 unsold houses following the 2008 collapse of its real estate market.

Government officials, however, are cautious about the idea.

"It is not government policy. Nor is it likely to become so," the spokeswoman for Spain's Economy Ministry said on condition of anonymity because she was not authorized to discuss future policy discussions.

Spain's residency idea for foreign home buyers would not give permanent residency or the privilege of working.

It still would beat other offers from bailed-out EU countries like Ireland and Portugal, where residency papers are offered to foreigners buying houses worth more than ?400,000 ($519,400) and ?500,000 ($649,300) respectively.

Even though these plans increase the number of people who have an EU passport, the EU says citizenship issues are the responsibility of national governments.

Latvia, an EU nation on the Baltic coast, offers a deal where property buyers are eligible to receive residency permits if they buy real estate in the capital Riga worth ?140,000 ($181,800) or places worth ?70,000 ($90,900) in the countryside.

Hungary's parliament has begun debating a proposal that would give foreigners purchasing at least ?250,000 ($324,600) in special bonds the possibility of obtaining residency rights but not citizenship. Lawmakers who drafted the proposal, which could be approved this year, say Chinese investors are among the groups targeted.

New Xbox due out before Christmas 2013 ? Video Games Reviews ...

Xbox

Evidence is mounting that Microsoft is entering the final stages of preparation for the next Xbox console. We?ve seen an increase in security at the Xbox buildings on the Microsoft campus, increased chatter from game developers about the next generation of consoles, and now comes a report that Microsoft?s next console will be hitting shelves before the 2013 holiday season. The report is complete with (some what sketchy) details about exactly how the company will actually unveil the new console.

There?s been a lot of talk about Microsoft?s future plans when it comes to gaming. We?ve seen the rumors of an Xbox tablet, we?ve seen supposed names like ?Xbox 720?, and we?ve hear talk of a lower cost Xbox that is used for casual gaming and streaming content. If you put all of that together, Microsoft?s Xbox division is pretty busy right now. A refresh to the popular console seems like a must at this point. Despite Microsoft?s talk of how proud they are that the industry has been able to change the rules regarding how long a console is supposed to last, a hardware refresh would open a lot of doors for the gaming industry as a whole.

xbox logoAs Project Durango gets closer and closer to reality, and patents for augmented reality glasses start to appear, the rumors surrounding what could be get pretty intense. There?s a few things that make a lot of sense, like a a deeper integration with Kinect 2 and a focus on delivering way more than just games to the console. Speculating on hardware at this point doesn?t make a lot of sense, though it seems likely that the controller will be up for tweaking to fit more with a Kinect 2 focused design. We know that companies like Crytek and Rare are already hiring developers to take advantage of the new hardware as well.

If Microsoft is to unveil new hardware this year, they are likely to make quite a show out of it. It?s possible that Microsoft would try to steal the show at E3, but it is just as likely that the company would assemble their own press event for the hardware. Microsoft had no problem using the Xbox 360 to stream their E3 announcement this year, delivering a massive captive audience to the news. Microsoft could easily take advantage of that same audience to announce their new hardware, whenever it actually arrives.

Belden to sell defense cable business to Carlisle for $265 million

(Reuters) - Cable maker Belden Inc said it will sell its Thermax and Raydex cable businesses to diversified manufacturer Carlisle Cos Inc for about $265 million, including debt, as it looks to exit the aerospace and defense markets.

Belden, which also makes cables and networking products for the broadcast and consumer electronics industries, has been unable to remain competitive offering cables as a stand-alone product to the aerospace and defense markets, company spokesman Matt Tractenberg said.

Thermax and Raydex, which have combined annual sales of about $112 million, make hook-up, data and coaxial wires and cables for commercial aerospace, defense and industrial markets.

Belden, which has a market value of about $3.53 billion, said it would use the proceeds to help fund a $200 million buyback of its common stock.

Carlisle said it expects the acquisition to close by December 31 and add to earnings in 2013.

Beldin's shares, which had gained about 6 percent in value so far this year, were up 5 percent at $37.92 in morning trade on the New York Stock Exchange. Carlisle's stock was up 1 percent at $56.68.
